The UK's National Cyber Security Centre just issued a joint statement with a number of allies about Russia. It includes a long list of new cyber attacks it can attribute to the country.

"Today, the UK and its allies can expose a campaign by the GRU, the Russian military intelligence service, of indiscriminate and reckless cyber attacks targeting political institutions, businesses, media, and sport."

The UK says it now has confirmed the GRU (Russian military intelligence) operates under all of these names:

     • APT 28
     • Fancy Bear
     • Sofacy
     • Pawnstorm
     • Sednit
    • CyberCaliphate
    • Cyber Berkut
    • Voodoo Bear
     • BlackEnergy Actors
     • STRONTIUM
     • Tsar Team
     • Sandworm

You can read the complete NCSC statement on Russian hacking here, if you'd like. Otherwise, here are some of the latest cyber attacks attributed to Russia and the Russian military's hackers.

Why is the UK suddenly pointing fingers at Russia?

The U.K.'s Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, puts it this way:

“These cyber attacks serve no legitimate national security interest, instead impacting the ability of people around the world to go about their daily lives free from interference, and even their ability to enjoy sport."

He went on to say that Russia is treating cyberspace like a place where international law and established norms do not apply, and that it is time for the UK and western allies to shine a light on this activity.

Which countries are the top 3 cyber threats to the United States?

The Foreign Secretary's statement reminds us of an interview we did at SecureWorld with the former Director of Operations at U.S. Cyber Command, Major General (Ret.) Brett Williams.

Listen to what he says about the way Russia views cyber, as he details the top three cyber threats to the United States.
