In the SecureWorld Spotlight Series, we learn about the speakers and Advisory Council members that make our events a success. In Q&A format, they share about their professional journeys, unique experiences, and hopes for the future of cybersecurity—along with some personal anecdotes.
His professional journey includes roles at the consulting firm AlixPartners, cybersecurity leader Mandiant, tech giant Google, and Michigan-based startup SensCy.
In 2022, he was appointed by the Michigan Secretary of State to serve on a task force that combatted misinformation and disinformation on college campuses. It also focused on election security. He currently holds office in Troy, MI, serving on the City's Redevelopment Authority.
Hemanth received the 40 under 40 award from Oakland County, MI. He serves on the board of directors for the Kettering University Alumni Board. He is also a Violist of the Troy Metro Symphony Orchestra, as music is a big part of his life.
Q: Why or how did you decide to pursue cybersecurity as a career path?
A: I decided to pursue cybersecurity as a career because of my passion for government, political science, public policy, and technology. My journey began with Model United Nations, where I combined my computer and technology skills with my interests in political science and policy-making. This experience showed me the potential to blend these fields. During my internships and leadership roles in various political campaigns, from local council races to U.S. Senate campaigns, I saw how cybersecurity played a role in policy and government. Seeing these challenges firsthand made me realize the importance of security measures to protect sensitive information and ensure the integrity of our political processes. These experiences and my love for technology naturally led me to a career in cybersecurity, where I can address emerging threats and enhance security across different sectors.
Q: When and why did you join your current organization (employer)?
A: I joined May Mobility around a year ago because I'm excited about their innovative approach to autonomous vehicle technology and the critical role cybersecurity plays in this area. At May Mobility, I'm a key player in developing and implementing the security measures that protect our advanced technology. I have significant ownership over cybersecurity decisions, allowing me to directly influence the safety and integrity of our autonomous vehicles. This role perfectly combines my passion for technology and security, and it gives me the chance to make a real impact in a rapidly evolving industry.
Q: What has been your most memorable moment thus far working in cybersecurity?
A: My most memorable moment has been the opportunity to speak at various conferences. Being invited to share my insights at these events not only underscores the importance of the evolving cybersecurity landscape but also allows me to engage with other professionals and stay ahead of emerging threats. Another highlight has been the mentorship opportunities. Guiding and inspiring the next generation of cybersecurity professionals is incredibly rewarding. It's fulfilling to pass on my knowledge and experience, helping others navigate this dynamic field and prepare for future challenges. Seeing their growth and passion for cybersecurity makes all the hard work worthwhile.
Q: How would you describe your feelings about working in the field of cybersecurity?
A: Working in cybersecurity is both exhilarating and fulfilling, as it offers the constant challenge of staying ahead of evolving threats while making a tangible impact on protecting critical information and technology.
Q: If you had to choose, what's the one cybersecurity practice people can adopt that would have the greatest impact on their organization?
A: Educating employees about phishing, social engineering, and safe online practices helps prevent human errors that can lead to security breaches. It is important to create campaigns that are realistic to what is happening within an organization as well as in the industry.
Q: What are the biggest challenges facing the cybersecurity profession?
A: Implementing strong security measures while maintaining end-user convenience and productivity can be a difficult balance to achieve.
Q: What are the biggest opportunities facing the profession?
A: Just like many places establishing law clinics, creating cybersecurity clinics would be highly beneficial. These clinics could work directly with the general public and small to medium-sized organizations, which are often the most vulnerable to cyber threats. By providing expert advice, resources, and hands-on assistance, these clinics could significantly improve the cybersecurity posture of these groups and enhance overall digital safety.
Q: When you tell people what you do for a living, what do you say?
A: When people ask what I do for a living, I say: "I'm a Cybersecurity and Compliance Engineer. I work on protecting autonomous vehicle technology from cyber threats by developing and implementing security measures. I'm responsible for infrastructure security, vehicle security, and ensuring compliance with governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) standards to keep our systems safe and secure."
Q: What advice do you have for someone considering cybersecurity as a career and/or someone new to the field who is looking to move up the career ladder?
A: Start by joining cybersecurity resource groups to network and find support from peers. Attending webinars is also important for staying updated on the latest trends; SecureWorld has some great ones. Schedule coffee chats with security professionals to gain insights and build connections. Stay current on cybersecurity news and follow industry leaders on LinkedIn. Attending in-person conferences is a great way to learn and network. If possible, shadow a cybersecurity professional at your organization to get hands-on experience.

Q: Lastly, what are you most looking forward to at your regional SecureWorld conference this year?
A: I'm excited about the opportunity to engage with industry experts and learn about the latest advancements in cybersecurity at this year's SecureWorld conference in Detroit. It's always great to attend sessions on emerging threats and new solutions, and I'm looking forward to networking with other professionals. Plus, being in Detroit adds an extra layer of excitement, given the city's dynamic tech scene and its rich history.
