We had barely hit publish on our article about the 5 Cybersecurity "Things" the IoT Needs Now, when we came across this gem of a video.
In this case, cybersecurity researchers took control of an LG 'Smart' vacuum and spied on the home through the vacuum's camera. But the vulnerability was apparently with the company's LG SmartThinQ App and could have lead to a virtual takeover of your connected home.
Check Point, which helped LG to spot and patch the vulnerabilities, says, "The HomeHack vulnerability could have allowed attackers to stop your refrigerator from working, turn on your oven, access the video camera on your robotic vacuum cleaner and turn the device into a spy in your home, or even turn your kitchen into a paddling pool by flooding your dishwasher."
This is more proof that the opportunities are endless for those who want to take advantage of cybersecurity holes in connected devices. If the devices even make an attempt at cybersecurity. You can see technical details of the hack, here.
This is also one of the reasons that Cigna CISO James Beeson told SecureWorld the cyber threat landscape is growing so fast.
LG has secured the vulnerability, just make sure you have the latest update of the company's SmartThinQ App.
